Halle Bailey is set to play the iconic role of Princess Ariel in Disney's upcoming live-action movie of "The Little Mermaid” which is the remake of the 1989 animated classic.
Singer-actress Halle Bailey is one half of the Atlanta-based musical sister duo Chloe x Halle. Bailey took to Twitter to say it was a “dream come true” with cartoon image of the princess in which the traditionally red-headed Ariel has dark skin, brown eyes and black hair.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance - plus a glorious singing voice - all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role," director Rob Marshall said in a statement.
While many are supporting the casting of Halle Bailey as a massive milestone in diversity for Disney, some twitter users disagree with the casting saying that Ariel is a white mermaid and altering the race of the most iconic Disney princess is just too much.
