Jim Carrey, who plays the villain Dr. Robotnik in the live-action version of Sonic the Hedgehog, speaks out on Sonic redesign.
When the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released, it got backlash for the look of it’s titular character. The trailer’s backlash prompted director Jeff Fowler to delay his live action video game adaptation in order to fix Sonic’s design. Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release on February 14, 2020.
It seems that Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming film, has no idea for what’s going to happen with Sonic’s redesign. When asked about his thoughts on the film getting delayed, Jim Carrey said,
I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation while it’s happening. So we’ll have to see what that entails. Because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something. And then when it gets it, it goes ‘Ok, I just wanted it. I didn’t care about it. I’ll just jump on the bandwagon or whatever.’ But I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I have no idea.
As Jim Carrey said, he is not sure whether the redesign will fully change people’s thoughts on Sonic the Hedgehog. The impact of Sonic redesign is unclear until the movie is released. He said that people may still reject it, even after the Sonic’s redesign is completely accurate to the game. He also believes that the backlash was done for fun rather than out of genuine concern for the character.
Nothing can be said for now until the next trailer with the redesign of Sonic is released. It will be then sure if the fan really wanted the look of Sonic to be changed.
